Password Protection

Add a layer of access control to any shortened link. Only people with the password can reach the destination, keeping your content private and secure.

How It Works

When you shorten a URL on Plung, you can optionally set a password. Once configured, anyone who clicks the shortened link will see a secure password prompt instead of being immediately redirected. The visitor must enter the correct password to proceed to the destination URL.

This feature is ideal for sharing sensitive resources, internal documents, gated content, or any link where you want to control who has access without relying on complex authentication systems.

Use Cases

  • Private content sharing: share links to confidential documents, drafts, or previews with only the people who have the password.
  • Gated access: distribute promotional offers, exclusive content, or early access links to a selected audience.
  • Internal communications: share internal resources across teams with an added layer of control.
  • Client deliverables: send project files, reports, or presentations to specific clients securely.

Security You Can Trust

Plung takes the security of password-protected links seriously. Passwords are never stored in plain text. We implement industry-standard security practices to ensure that your access controls remain effective and your data stays protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is password protection free on Plung?+
Yes. Password protection is available at no cost through the public shortener. No account is required. For API-based usage through the developer platform, feature availability depends on your subscription plan.
How does password protection work?+
When you set a password during link creation, anyone who clicks the shortened URL will be presented with a password prompt before being redirected to the destination. Only visitors who enter the correct password will be granted access.
Is the password stored securely?+
Yes. Passwords are securely processed before storage. Plung does not store passwords in plain text and implements industry-standard security practices to protect your data.
Can I change or remove the password after creating a link?+
Password settings are configured at the time of link creation. Once a password-protected link is created, the password cannot be modified or removed through the public interface. If you need a link without a password, you may create a new shortened link.
What happens if someone enters the wrong password?+
Visitors who enter an incorrect password will be denied access to the destination URL and may retry. Standard security protections are in place to prevent brute-force attempts.
